surrealism and the unconscious
This contest is different from any other you’ve seen: it is as much an award opportunity as it is a learning opportunity. Its purpose is to inspire writers to use surrealism as a way to not only rely on their unconscious (and often poetic) thoughts that defy logic to create a literary masterpiece but to also overcome writer’s block. We wish not only to award monetary prizes to talented writers but more importantly, to offer a learning experience for those who can’t afford to attend expensive workshops or pay editors for feedback. This contest will increase accessibility for everybody in every step of the writing process.
1st place: $200 / 2nd place: $100 /
3 honorable mentions: $25 /
The way that we are structuring this contest will inevitably lead to lots and lots of learning for you along the way. You better be ready!

The Aurdre Lorde Questionaire to Oneself
why we are doing this
Perhaps the most important part of this Journal is a large-scale poetry contest, which has been something I have longed to host since The Aurora Journal first started receiving recognition. My Journal acknowledges the demographic disparities of the literary field, which is dominated by cisgender, white males. Therefore, I am striving to build it as a platform that welcomes writers from all marginalized identities and backgrounds to showcase their work. Although my audience and writers can be anybody, I strive to make writing and learning more accessible to everybody. I hope to close the publishing gaps of POC and other marginalized communities through this paid poetry contest as well as being a paying journal.
