Frances Koziar

I sit on the grass beside a leg of the bridge, and watch the water twirl and dance beneath an endless blue sky.

Above me, cars zoom by: loud to my silence, fast to my steady breathing. I finger the scar on my copper arm, still there after all these years, as I cup the flower I brought. I hear the screech of the tires in my memory, feel the blow of us striking the water.

Then, I toss my wife’s flower into the river, and watch it spin once before it’s carried away.
