I Met God Yesterday, She Was Wearing Leg Warmers

Katie Proctor

i.

i met god yesterday, she was wearing leg warmers and i saw stars in her eyes. she bought me
a drink, peach tea and cloudberry cake, and asked me if i believed in anything holy.

ii.

so i say god is buttered toast and sea creatures and she looks at me from the mirror and she
contemplates that god is a dying cactus planted in soil made of sugar.

iii.

and of course i fucking do, because holy lives in the crack between the pavement and the blue
door to utopia. i tell her how i stood there laughing in the rain like in a movie.

iv.

she parts her hair with a blade of lightning, slides a receipt and a note across the table. i shed
my second skin like a larva. make it happen, it reads. because god says so.
